cat using litterbox as a bed.?

she's using the damned covered litterbox as a bed. i've everything to get her to stop doing this, including setting up cat beds, putting catnip on the beds, leaving an open carrier where she is, yet she keeps sleeping in there. frankly, it's really gross, considering she shares space w/ my other cat, %26 she comes out smelling like the inside of the box.

any ideas on what io can do to curb this? she's never done this before, %26 it's becoming exasperating. thank you.

OH that is too funny! Interestingly, this is not all that uncommon for kittens or cats that are confined to a small enclosed space (like a cat in a kennel cage or cat show shelter). It sounds like she's "nesting". I think there are 2 things you can do:

1) Use an uncovered litterbox (at least temporarily) to make it less inviting to her as a nest.
2) Provide her with a "covered bed". Check out these "cat tents" at http://www.cattoyscattoys.com/catbeds_2.. . Cat's love them. You could also try Target, which sells these "critter cubes" that my cats absolutely love.

I think if you provide her with a more inviting place to sleep that makes her feel as secure as she does in her litterbox, she will stop using the litterbox as her nest.

Good luck!
My cats like the cube-like beds, too. I volunteer for a cat shelter and when the cats first go to the adoption center, the ones who are more shy will hang out in the litterbox for the first few days. The suggestion about taking the top off the covered litterbox is a good one. Try that and getting her one of the covered bed cube things.
my cat likes to lay in the box right after i change the litter. i punish him by smacking his head and hollering, and he gets right out. punish her whenever you see her sleeping in the litterbox, and reward her when she uses it correctly.

  1. You shouldnt let your cat use the cat litter as his bed. How about buying your pet a new cat bed and donot allow him to sleep on the cat litter.
