according to our vet, who i just called, they considered 4 months roughly. Remember that at age 1 year that would equal about 14 years in human time.

Well, a cat takes about a year to develop to about the equivalent of a human at age fifteen. At a year old they've taken on adult proportions and they're approaching adult size, but they still have some growing to do. They're sexually developed and have been aboe to breed for a while, but hey're probably not yet mature enough for effective parenthood.
At age two a cat is about equivalent to a human at age twenty-three, solidly established in adulthood.
So by a year a cat is no longer a kitten, and by age two it's definitely an adult cat. When you stop calling it a kitten and start calling it a cat is pretty much up to you, but any time from somewhere short of a year to maybe a year and a half would probably be appropriate.
