Cat problems!?

You know those times when you are petting your cat as she sits in your lap and she begins to purr. She then starts to dig his/her nails into. I wear very thin clothing but I like the feeling of my cat sitting in my lap. any suggestions for anti clawing?
Answers:
Don't do it. It's a painful procedure and they actually remove a toe to do it. When she starts digging the claw in simply lift her paw or put her on a blanket when on your lap. Really declawing is not kind. what would happen to her if she got outside or you bought another pet into the house?
She is doing what they refer to as milk treading. It's a trait carried over from kittenhood. Kittens use this method to push the milk out of their mother when suckling. I would suggest just clipping the ends of your cat's claws so they won't be so sharp. That should do the trick.
get your cat declawed
I love my cats but I hate being clawed like that too.

I normally hold gently onto their paws when they do this, say no %26 then stroke their heads.

Eventually it works, mine mostly don't knead me with their claws now.
You can buy "Soft Paws", they're claw covers that you can get at the vet clinic. I use them on my cat, they're easy to put on, all you do is snip off the very ends of the claws, squeeze a little glue into the claw covers (comes with the covers) and slide them on. You can get them in different sizes and colors, they even have them for dogs!
never have a cat declawed. when your cat is on your lap, put an old slipper under her claws for her to "needle". we do this with 2 of our cats, they were taken from their mom to early and they also try to suck on our clothing. the slipper idea works for our 2 cats. GOOD LUCK.
You can teach her not to do this by holding her paws. Or, put her on a blanket in your lap.
put a blanket on your lap
This is a normal and natural thing that cats do. It's an expression of contentness, security, and love so don't hold it against her or consider getting her de-clawed for it. How about just putting a soft peice of fabric or a blanket under her claws so she can knead that? Most cats like the feel of soft things.
Put a nice thick, soft towel in your lap. She wants to show she loves you. The vet can put temporary plastic caps over her claws. This is certainly more humane than having her declawed--which really should not be done.
Hi there.consider trimming your kitties nails every other week. Here's a video by Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine that show step-by-step instructions: http://www.felinevideos.vet.cornell.edu/.

Here's also a website that shows photos with a description on how to trim a cat's nails: http://www.catscratching.com/htmls/artic.
Don't declaw her just for this! It is an easy problem to fix with a bit of patience.
When she starts to bring out the nails, briefly stop stroking her and take gentle hold of her paws. Tell her something along the line of "no claws", "ouch", etc. my dad will tell his cat to "put up the knife, boy!" lol. I tell mine "no sharps!" When mine get carried away with rough housing I say "Ouch! That's too rough" When she retracts the nails, resume petting.
It will take a few times for her to realize that nails coming out means she loses out on getting loving. If she won't quit after about 5 times,, very gently squeeze as you tell her no (start w just a firm grip to stop the clawing motion- not enough to cause her pain)
You can clip the nailtips to lessen the sharpness and decrease the risk of snags to your clothes untill she learns to keep her sharps to herself.
Put a towel on your lap under the kitty. Fold it over so it's four layers thick. Should help.
The simplest way is to trim the tips of her nails (befor the part where it changes color) every few weeks. She'll file it to a blunt point pretty soon by scratching things, and it won't hurt even if she digs it into you.

Or, you could put a blanket or towel beneath your cat (my cat likes paper, and I'll often find her sitting on newspaper or cardboard boxes).

Of course, you could always train her to stop doing that by firmly saying "No!" (or spraying water if you must. though your cat will probably hate you for it) everytime she starts to do that, but it'll end up ruining the mood and she'll look at you funny.

If you lift up her paws immediately after she starts to dig them into you and then give her a treat, she might stop doing it. The key here is to do it everytime, though it will probably stop working after a while if you stop giving her treats. The downside is that she'll probably learn that you'll give her a treat if she digs her claws into you and let go after a second. Oh, and you'll probably end up with a billion little marks on your skin before she gets the point. There's a reason why you don't see a lot of cats doing tricks.
i have 5 cats and all of them do it its just there way of saying i like this, try having a blanket on the sofa or where you would normaly stroke her and put that on your lap first or you could have her nails trimmed, just a sergestion
Some cats like to dig their claws in more than others. It shows they are contented. and as already mentioned by someone else, its just the furthering of kittenhood instincts when feeding..

My recommendation to you is either to wear thicker clothing or just learn to endure it. I've known a few cats that liked to do that, and took a liking to me because I was the only person who wouldn't get angry at them for it. Sometimes you just have to carefully coax them into a position while stroking them whereby they don't have their forepaws on your legs, or simply cannot dig their claws in. but you have to be really subtle about it or they'll notice and possibly resent you for it.

Then again, if you reach a sufficient level of familiarity with a cat it is possible to convey to them your discomfort when they are digging their claws in, and if they consider you highly enough they WILL stop. They are, afterall, fair and gracious masters. if served correctly.
my cat does this to. I trim his nails, but if he' s already on your lap touch his paws, he'll retract his nails
www.petco.com soft claws i think their called i have them .they work great.no sticking you.no scratching furiture !! woot :D
