My cat has diarrhea, this is the 6th day. She's eathing the usual food, and it looks to me that she's fine, playfull as always. What could be the problem? She never leaves the apartment, so she couldn't get any disease from other cats. And she was at a doctor 3 weeks ago.
Do you know any house-made treatment, that you tried and worked? I can't take her to the doctor, he's out of town.

Have you switched cat foods lately? Sometimes a sudden change in foods, even different flavors can cause diarrhea in cats. Also it might be the type of food she is eating. Typically cheaper, less expensive foods can cause digestive problems. It could be a lot of things. If your vet is going to be gone for longer than 3 more days, I would schedule an appointment with another vet and have your cat checked out.
You failed to mention if your cat is on dry food, or wet food. If wet food, then change it to dry food. Also, how old is your cat? Make sure it gets plenty of water, since diarrhea will dehydrate a cat.

Most over the counter stuff does not work for cats. Didn't this vet leave someone to cover? Open the phone book, man, check under "V". Six days is a long time.
Try feeding her just a little bit less. My cat has that problem sometimes when he over eats. I no longer just leave food out for him. He gets small amounts a few times a day.

Basically a virus that's producing flu like symptoms. In fact, one of our kittens died that my wife was caring for from the animal shelter. The other two kittens from the litter had 105 and 106 degree temps! The doc prescribed some antibiotic which I didn't think would help but it appears to be helping. But now the other cats in the house are sneezing and producing lots of mucus.

The fact that your cat is indoors doesn't mean she cannot get infected from other cats - you go outdoors, and you regularly bring infections in. Sorry to tell you, but that's the truth.
Also, even though it's commonly believed, wet food does NOT give runny joy - but dry food does. That's because wet food is digested much better by the cat. Actually, chronic diarrhea can be cured by switching to home-made raw meat diet (see http://www.catnutrition.org ). I would advise switching to wet food if you're feeding her dry, because, along with the runs, you cat can get highly dehydrated (cats have very low thirst drive because they usually get their moisture content from their pray, and dry food has a LOT less water than feline diet should contain).
I would advise also at least calling the vet - there are viruses that go to cats too, and a vet can know if there is an infection where you live.
Have plenty of water out for your cat. Don't overfeed. Give lots of love and affection, and if you feel your cat is upset or is doing strange things, just take her to the vet.

Oh. don't feed milk in any form to your cat - not yoghurt, not cheese, not milk, unless it's special cat milk and that very seldom. Milk can give a cat the runs, cats are lactose intollerant.
Thank you, Katrina. I was also told, by old-time cat owners, that wet food is not good for regular diet, but web info and experimentation taught me that my cat thrives on canned food. I haven't got around to making him food at home, but. I shall. And his stool is less, and very compact, and doesn't smell quite as troublesome as it used to when he was on dry food.
BTW, tuna fish is NOT to be given to cats daily, not even the brine from the can - it depletes cats' store of vitamins (especially, I've read, vitamin E) and that can cause serious long-term damage. Tuna fish should not be given to cats more than once a week.
NO, Science diet and Iams are NOT good foods, just much advertised. Anything that contains rice or corn or wheat should be avoided. Anything that has "by-products" among the first three ingredients should be avoided. That's just for the sake of your cat's health, you know.

AlphaOne rocks! I get so tired of being the only one to say this; dry food doesn't do much for cats. It doesn't do much for their teeth since their teeth aren't designed to mash food; the kibble shatters in their mouth, and large chunks are swallowed whole..with little to no abrasive affect on the teeth. And sometimes large chunks can get stuck between the teeth, become acidic, and form plaque.
And soft food is more easily digested by cats. Raw meat, too. We recently switched our cats from an almost all dry food diet to two canned food meals a day. I keep a high quality dry food around just for occasional snacks, but it's not often used.
The poster who suggested Science Diet.doesn't know what he's talking about. I wasted a boatload of money on that crap. And if you want proof that it's crap, just read the ingredients list; by-products and corn up the wazoo. Not to mention Science Diet is one of the only brands still using the controversial preservatives BHT, BHA, and ethoxyquin (most other cat food manufacturers have abadonded use of those for more natural alternatives).

Wet food may help for the time being.it will at least help make sure she doesn't become dehydrated. Just a note; we adopted a female cat nearly 4 weeks ago..when we first got her, she'd empty a water bowl in a few hours. Now that she's on wet food twice a day, she's not sucking down nearly as much water out of her bowl. This is because cats are designed to get most of their water from their food (living animals are about 78% water).
Plain yogurt is good for the digestive system along with pumpkin pie filling, best to find one with small amounts of sugar.
If you give your cat milk, too much of it can give her diarrhea. Too much of certain foods can give her diarrhea as well. If your cat is still active and playful, then she is most likely not in any real danger. Try giving her the juice out of a can of tuna fish once a day, and see if that helps to stop the diarrhea. Or, give her just dry food, and eliminate any wet food that you may be giving her.
A lot of kittens have coccidia, something that may or may not show up in a fecal exam. If you have not had your kttens stool tested by your vet, you should. Roundworms can also cause this problem as well as giardia. With coccidia the kitten gets the squrts occasionally and sometimesit is normsl
Now the issue is how to stop it- are you feeding a high quality kitten food? Science Diet or Iams are the best- watch the "natural" products that are full of excesses in nutrients such as phosphorous.
If your food is adequate- feed her very little and add rice and chicken baby food- this helps block her up a little.
The biggest problem will be dehydration from diarrhea so get her checked out by your vet.
Was she ever checked for parasites or intestinal flukes? Is she gaining weight and growing normally? Even indoor cats can still get contagious diseases, like if she sits in the window and a contagious cat approaches the window, maybe sneezes or licks the screen.
Cats can not process OTC meds that are kept in the normal household. To offer her something could be life threatening or minimally cause permanent liver or kidney damage. Please, call your vet. If he is out of town, they should be able to direct you to an alternative who is taking his patients on an emergency basis while he is gone. Cats can dehydrate fast. Make sure her gums are pink and moist, not tacky or pale. Pinch the skin between her shoulder blades and be sure it falls right back into place. If it takes any time falling back into place, she is becoming dehydrated. Good luck.

What you can do with your cat suffering from diarrhea is to get some jarred baby food from the grocery store. Pure chicken or turkey (absolutely without ONION or GARLIC, so read the label.
Cats love this meat and it will be soothing and easily digested by your cat. You can even add some cooked brown rice, cooked winter squash or canned pumpkin (pure pumpkin not spiced or with sugar) to help firm up her stool.
This "diet" should only be used for three to four days as the baby food contains no taurine, an essential amino acid that cats must have in their diet. Of course you must contact the vet again if the cat does not get some relief.
Katrina - you are not the only one here promoting better, more natural diets for cats. Seattle and I and some others keep working at it too. We are all fighting the advertising of the commercial food manufacturers with their 100% balanced and nutritional complete cereals. So keep plugging away at it. Just leave her be. They pretty much go into autopilot, and they know what to do when the kittens are born.

She'll pant heavily and yowl when she's due but her instincts will kick in soon enough and she'll probably just find a sheltered area and give birth without any help from you at all.
Oh and If you don't plan on keeping the kittens, take them (when they're old enough, of course) to the animal shelter. Kittens get snatched up quick so they'll find new homes in no time.

cats have gone crazy! they have started to eat the teats of my daughters cups + bottles ..they are nearly 3?

You need to make sure you remove the teats away from the cats they may just be associating it with their mothers nipple or its just a new toy to them so remove them how old is your daughter because if she is over 14 months she could come of the bottles and use normal cups or a child cup with no teats good luck

Is your daughter very young? they maybe craving attention as ur spending alot of time with her and not as much time as you used to before with them. a quick fix to the problem would be to put the cups and teats in a place that's not reachable by the cats, and when the cats grab the teats/cups to take them off before they damage them

I keep a "Bad Kitty" spray bottle of water set on stream and when I she her doing something she shouldn't I spray. "Not cruel" she stops what she was doing and goes on it worked well for me we have two birds that stay in her reach and dont have a problem . Now just don't let your daughter get a hold of the spray bottle

If you change food suddenly and the ingredients vary much you are almost guarenteed to get the slippery poops. Always mix the food -some old and some new for at least a week -if you are out of the old food then buy a small bag to mix with the new.
Bacteria can also be a cause and poisoning by ingesting of a chemical or perhaps an animal that may have been poisoned by an exterminator. Could also happen if the cat is drinking toilet or pool water that has chlorine or some other chemicals in it.
Unless you can positively confirm pretty quick have your pet checked out to be sure it isn't something worse as there are some serious things cats can get like feline distemper.
You can give the cat a small dose of keopetate(misspelled). If that doesn't help, I suggest you take her to the vet.

Cat's hair falling out?
I have a four-year-old cat, he's neutered, declawed, and stays indoors 24/7. Over the past few weeks, his hair has been falling out in big chunks. His butt is almost completely bald from his hair loss. He also throws up alot, not just hair, but cat food. Any ideas of what this could be? I haven't changed his type of food or litter, nothing new or unusual in his day-to-day life, just his hair falling out. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

First off, he definitely needs to go to the vet. It could be anything, from a thyroid problem to a vitamin or mineral deficiency, or something that I can't even think of. He may just be vomiting because of the irritation from grooming his hair that's falling out.

Meanwhile, you might try feeding him a better brand of cat food (more nutritious). Personally, I've had good luck with Nutro Natural Choice for cats (I think it's called Nutro Complete Care, or something like that). Just stay away from anything that lists anything other than meat as the first ingredient. Cats are naturally carnivores, and do not need corn or other "fillers".

it is common in cats and dogs to shed. however alot of shedding could be a sign of not enough nutrition. that doesn't mean that your not feeding your cat its just that probly what your feeding your cat is not nutritional. about the throwing up and the hair balls. sorry honey i'm not a vet but i hope you take my advise. take your darling cat to the vet to have him/her checked out. you don't wanna wait too long.

cats gone mad?
i have had my cat for 18 months but in the last few days has developed a fear of walking on the carpet. it is not a new carpet and there is no obvious reason for this. if you put him on the carpet he freezes then runs as quick as he can until he is off the carpet.

this is what our family call 'the flea syndrome' when they run across as quickly as possible to avoid getting bitten or having fleas jump on them. It means your carpet is harbouring fleas, their larvae and eggs, no matter how tight the weave they're there and the cat knows it. Get some spray especially for fleas and mites and spray, particularly round the edges and skirting boards. It'll also destroy mites. But dont forget to treat the cat with frontline as well or they will be back within days (on him again). And dont forget to chuck him out before you start spraying. Good luck!

My cat did that when we replaced the outdoor carpet on our screened in back porch. He didn't like the feel, I guess. I ran over it as if it were made of needles, then jumped up on the furniture. He's OK now, but for months you'd have thought that the carpet was on fire! My opinion is that your cat just decided that it doesn't like the feel of carpet. It must be a funny site to see!

you say it's not a new carpet so it can't be that.. has he walked on it before, or was it in another room , if not perhaps he doesn't like the feel of the carpet on his paws, have alook at his paws and see if the is anything on them that is annoying him when he goes on the carpet.. unless it's in a room that is haunted and your cat doesn't like what he can see in that room..

Actually this isnt an uncommon problem, i watched a show all about this on animal planet once. they arent exactly sure what causes this problem but they were able to train some of the animals to relax and walk on the specific type of flooring, wood, tile, carpet.etc..
Something bad that we don't know about must have happended to him on that carpet. Now he fears the carpet associating it to the trauma in question.

Maybe you walked on something outside and the scent ended up on the carpet from your shoes. or if the humidity is low, maybe he is getting shocks from the carpet. Good luck!
I would get some rugs for the cat to walk on/jump to so he doesn't have to step on the carpet. He doesn't like to walk on it for whatever reason. I have this rug that my cat stepped on once and decided she hated it. Now she will occasionally walk on it but it is a very big deal for her like "oh, okay, I did it! Whew! I survived!" She hates that rug! :) lol
perhaps he is getting static shocks?

Did the cat seem comfortable on the carpet before this new behavior development? I'm wondering if it could be something on the carpet that is emitting an unpleasant taste or odor. If you've used a carpet shampoo, spot cleaner, or a deodorant/freshener in powder form, could be the cat doesn't like the smell. Or, he could have stepped in the product, licked his paws, and found the taste offensive. It could have even burned his tongue or made him ill.
If another animal has been in your home, maybe your cat is detecting its scent and is reacting accordingly.
I would check his feet as well. Do his claws need trimming? Have you ever noticed him getting his claws caught in the pile of the carpet? Are there any sores on the pads of his feet?
I'd do some detective work and search for "clues." You may find the reason for the cat's craziness! Good luck!

it sounds like a flea infestation.most cats will try to avoid carpet at all costs if that happends.hoover it,flea spray it and a week or so he should walk on it fine

this is what our family call 'the flea syndrome' when they run across as quickly as possible to avoid getting bitten or having fleas jump on them. It means your carpet is harbouring fleas, their larvae and eggs, no matter how tight the weave they're there and the cat knows it. Get some spray especially for fleas and mites and spray, particularly round the edges and skirting boards. It'll also destroy mites. But dont forget to treat the cat with frontline as well or they will be back within days (on him again). And dont forget to chuck him out before you start spraying. Good luck!
p.s. had cats all my life and this 'freeze' action followed by quick sprint is 100% accurate as flea indicator.

My cat did that when we replaced the outdoor carpet on our screened in back porch. He didn't like the feel, I guess. I ran over it as if it were made of needles, then jumped up on the furniture. He's OK now, but for months you'd have thought that the carpet was on fire! My opinion is that your cat just decided that it doesn't like the feel of carpet. It must be a funny site to see!

Have you cleaned the carpet lately? Maybe there's something on it that bugs the heck out of ur cat.Call carpet cleaners today..LoL..Ask a cat expert or something, maybe ask the carpet cleaner? I dono.. Have fun figuring that 1 out!
you say it's not a new carpet so it can't be that.. has he walked on it before, or was it in another room , if not perhaps he doesn't like the feel of the carpet on his paws, have alook at his paws and see if the is anything on them that is annoying him when he goes on the carpet.. unless it's in a room that is haunted and your cat doesn't like what he can see in that room..
Cats make no sense. They do not follow rules. They go mad at a whim. That's just how they are!
Actually this isnt an uncommon problem, i watched a show all about this on animal planet once. they arent exactly sure what causes this problem but they were able to train some of the animals to relax and walk on the specific type of flooring, wood, tile, carpet.etc..
Something bad that we don't know about must have happended to him on that carpet. Now he fears the carpet associating it to the trauma in question.

If you want good, healthy kittens your best bet is a shelter where the kittens have been wormed, tested for feline diseases, checked by a vet and frequently have been spayed or neutered and started on basic and important kitten shots. The adoption fees cover these services and are usually half of what it would cost you to have those services performed on the "open" market.
Your taxes support the operation of your local shelter - including the rescue of abused or abandoned cats and dogs in your community.
If you adopt a kitten who is "free" you only support ignorant people who do not spay their cats and contribute to the tragic overpopulation of companion animals in the US.
I know many places to find kittens, but, I won't tell you because I question why you would want a litter of kittens.

There are lots of places to find "free" kittens (newspaper, on-line, etc.) but keep in mind that the "free" kittens really don't end up being "free".
If you adopt a kitten from an animal shelter they will already be spayed or neutered, have had their vaccinations, been tested for aids and leukemia and probably already be microchipped.
If you take a kitten to the vet and have everything done there, it is usually going to cost you a lot more.
The animal shelters have so many kittens and older cats that are loving and desperate for a home, please consider one of them!
